Frequently Asked Questions
What
is the break-in period for my new Saturn and what are the break-in
requirements? Saturn
doesn't have an elaborate break-in period. We recommend that
during the first 500 miles of driving you should avoid full-throttle
starts (i.e., pressing the accelerator all the way to the floor),
cruising at any one constant speed for an extended period of
time and towing a trailer. We also recommend against hard stops
during the first 200 miles or so, as with every time you have
new brake linings installed, to give your brake linings the
opportunity to break in. This will help prevent premature wear
on the brake linings. Please refer to the Owner's Handbook for
more details.
How
often should you have the transmission fluid changed in a Saturn? Saturns
equipped with manual transmissions should have the fluid changed
after the first 6,000 miles or six months only. Saturns equipped
with automatic transmissions should have the fluid replaced
every 30,000 miles or 30 months -- whichever comes first. Please
refer to the maintenance schedule listed in the scheduled maintenance
services section of the Owner's Handbook for more details.
What
type of engine oil should be used, and how often does Saturn
recommend the oil be changed? Saturn
recommends using oil that has been certified by the American
Petroleum Institute (API) for gasoline engines. API certified
oil can be identified by a "starburst" symbol on the
front of the container. Do not use any oil that doesn't carry
this symbol. SAE 5W30 viscosity oil is the best for your vehicle
in most weather conditions. However, you can use SAE 10W30 if
you operate your car a majority of the time in temperatures
above 20 degrees (Fahrenheit) or -7 degrees (Celsius). Do not
use other viscosity oils. (Please refer to the Owner's Handbook
for more information.) Saturn recommends changing the oil and
filter every three months or 3,000 miles -- whichever comes
first -- for most driving conditions. The oil-life monitor in
the newer models helps to eliminate confusion of exactly when
to change your oil. Please refer to the Owner's Handbook for
specific examples of driving conditions.
Will
it void my warranty if a Saturn retailer does not perform the
scheduled maintenance on my car? Although
Saturn recommends scheduled maintenance be performed at an Authorized
Saturn Service Facility, such as Saturn of Rochester, it will
not void the warranty to have properly performed scheduled maintenance
by a non-Saturn service facility. Saturn recommends that you
retain receipts covering performance of regular vehicle maintenance.
Receipts can be very important if a question arises as to whether
a malfunction is caused by lack of scheduled maintenance or
a defect in material or workmanship. Please refer to the Warranty
and Owner Assistance Information Booklet located in the front
pocket of the Owner's Handbook for complete details.
Can
I use an automatic car wash? Yes,
but Saturn suggests that before using any automatic car wash
you should inquire about what type of brushes are used. Don't
use automatic washes that use hard (nylon) brushes since they
can cause damage (micro-scratches) to any vehicle with a "basecoat/clearcoat"
paint finish. High-pressure washes may also allow water to get
inside your car.
How
do I clean the leather interior in my Saturn? Saturn
recommends using a soft, cotton cloth with lukewarm water and
a mild soap or saddle soap. Never use oils, varnishes, solvent-based
abrasive cleaners, furniture polish or shoe polish on interior
leather surfaces. And it is important to clean soiled leather
immediately, before dirt is allowed to work into the finish
and harm the leather permanently. Please refer to the Owner's
Handbook for details.
